Outdoor Portraits

Outdoor Portraits

Hello all! It feels like we’ve decided to skip Spring and dive straight into Summer. I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to see the last of the snow this year.

Warmer weather means shorts, cold treats enjoyed outside, trips to the park, and enjoying the beauty spots in Gloucestershire. For us, it means using the lovely temperatures and beautiful natural conditions to shoot outdoors.

(Interested in getting an outdoor portrait done of yourself and your family? Give us a call at 01452 310002 or email us at bookings@empirestatephotography.co.uk and let’s talk about it!)

Don’t like the weather? Wait fifteen minutes!

In Britain, you can’t always count on having a beautiful, sunny day for your pictures. On any given day, there is at least a slight chance of clouds, if not rain. That’s okay! Overcast weather makes for a natural diffuser, so it makes the human skin look incredible. It may not be intuitive, but a cloudy day can make for some killer photos in natural light!

The Golden Hour

If you have an interest in Photography, you may have heard about The Golden Hour. This is a period of time just after sunrise or before sunset where the quality of the light is a little softer and redder than it is when the sun is high in the sky. It’s true – you can get some truly incredible shots working outdoors during the Golden Hour!

It’s especially fun when the weather is nice and warm!

Unfortunately, as we approach the warmer season, sunrise comes earlier and sunset comes later. This means that if you want to take advantage of these gorgeous lighting conditions, you’re going to have to get out there for an early start at 6 AM or a late finish at 9 PM. Wrangling children at those hours can be extremely challenging, depending on the age, but the results are often worth it!

Light is beautiful during the Golden Hour!

Action Shots!

A big benefit to shooting outside with children is the ability to capture them in their natural habitat – having loads of fun at play! It’s difficult to tell a child to sit still in front of a studio backdrop. It’s the easiest thing in the world to tell a child to run around and have fun in the park, and you can get great shots out of it.

It can be difficult to nail the focus on shots like these, especially if you’re getting the frame in tight to the face. When they’re excited at play, though, opportunities come quickly and easily.

A baby in motion is extremely hard to catch in-focus!

How can I book an outdoor session?

Outdoor sessions are a little bit different to our usual offerings. We charge £195 for an outdoor appointment as opposed to our usual New York Package rate. This is because an outdoor session necessarily occupies a much larger time slot than usual, as well as requiring us to bring all of the kit to the location and back.

To compensate for the higher price, you do get more at the end of the shoot. Four images are included in the cost instead of the usual one! We also allow up to ten subjects instead of the usual eight, because the normal restrictions on fitting large numbers of people against our backdrops no longer apply.

To book an outdoor session, please have a think about where you’d like the shoot done and how many people you’d like to invite. Then, give us a call at 01452 310002 to discuss it with us, so we can work out a date and time!

Top Three Tips For Your Pet Photoshoot

Top Three Tips For Your Pet Photoshoot

Pets are more than just friends. They’re family. Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or something more exotic, they’re an important part of your household. Great news – we do allow well-behaved pets in the studio! Why not let us create a beautiful portrait of them for you to keep forever?

Pets are a unique and fun challenge! Most of them are fairly bad at following directions – Cats, for example, pride themselves on doing the opposite of what you want them to. Even so, there’s a natural beauty to animals that lends itself to some stunning photography. Here’s some advice for bringing your pet into the studio!

Patience:

Being calm and patient goes a long way toward making your pet feel at ease in the studio. Dogs are especially sensitive to human emotions and they respond well to human cues. If you’re relaxed, they’re relaxed.

It can be difficult to get a good shot of any pet, but patience is always rewarded. We’ve never had a situation where getting a satisfying image was outright impossible, and the key is keeping a cool head.

Bribery:

Sometimes, being calm is not quite enough. That’s okay. The next step is a classic – bribery!

Treats and the promise of treats can work wonders with regard to getting your pet to hold position for the camera. Dogs understand the concept well and will frequently cooperate in exchange for payment. Cats also understand the concept of collecting tribute from their humans, and can often be convinced to stay in one place if you pay them.

This cooperation only lasts for a moment in a lot of cases, but that’s often enough. It only takes a second to capture the image.

Bribery is a tried and true method.

Cuddles:

Is your pet inclined to dash under the couch when you put them down? Do they find the urge to sniff everything in sight irrepressible? This is where cuddles can help.

A dog wants to be near you most of the time to begin with, so they’re much more inclined to sit still for a photograph if their favorite humans are sitting with them. Pets like Cats and Rabbits are also small enough to hold, which both makes for a touching picture and prevents them from flying off at the same time.

Dogs and Cats are by no means the only pets we do. We’re perfectly willing to take pictures of any family pet you can bring, as long as we can get it up to the studio! To enquire, email us at bookings@empirestatephotography.co.uk or call us at 01452310002.

The Frosty Foster Wedding

The Frosty Foster Wedding

We recently had the privilege of shooting a local wedding. It was a fantastic experience for all of us! There were a lot of great moments to document, and it was a genuine honor to be asked to take the photos. The weather was cold, but the mood was warm!

(Interested in getting a studio portrait? To book a session with us, help yourself to a substantial 40% off discount by booking online below!)

We shot at three different locations for this – the Shire Hall in Gloucester, Hillfield Gardens Park, and finally at the All Nations Club for the reception. It was over the weekend of the 3rd March, and the weather was uncharacteristically cold and snowy. Remember “The Beast From The East”? We were right in its grip!

Getting portraits done in the snow is actually a lot of fun and makes for some amazing shots, but convincing the bridal party to suffer for art by standing in the chill on their special day while we work is much, much harder.

Fortunately, the results speak for themselves!

This was a long time coming!

The highlight of the night was, for me, the Groom’s Speech. He surprised us all with a Reggae song in front of everyone, serenading his beautiful bride with something genuine, heartfelt, and incredible. He really nailed it – there wasn’t a dry eye in the room!

It’s incredible when a wedding becomes a concert!
